Data Storage Converter

Convert decimal SI and binary IEC storage without calling two different units by the same name. This fixes the common 1,000-versus-1,024 confusion.

GB and GiB are not interchangeable. Decimal units use powers of 1,000; binary IEC units use powers of 1,024.

How this tool works

The tool converts every value to bytes, then divides by the exact size of the selected output unit. SI units such as GB use powers of 1,000; IEC units such as GiB use powers of 1,024.

When it is useful

Use it when comparing advertised drive capacity with operating-system displays, planning cloud storage, checking upload limits, sizing backups or translating technical specifications.

Accuracy and unit standards

One GB is exactly 1,000,000,000 bytes. One GiB is exactly 1,073,741,824 bytes. Some software labels GiB values as ‘GB’; the calculator keeps them separate so the numerical result remains honest.
